San Diego County Jail Roster

The San Diego County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check if a person is in custody at one of the county's correctional facilities in California. SanDiegoCourt.us provides access to public information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official sheriff's website, in person at the jail reception, or by calling the information line. The roster is maintained by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and is regularly updated to reflect the current custody status. The search allows you to find out a person's status, charges, and booking information — a transparency tool available to the public 24/7 online.

Search Current Inmates in San Diego Jail

There are several ways to find information about an inmate in the county jail.

Online Search

  1. Visit SanDiegoCourt.us to find public information about court cases and custody.
  2. For criminal case searches, use the online case search of the San Diego County Superior Court — the system accepts the defendant's name or the DA case number.
  3. The official inmate roster from the Sheriff's Department is available on the sheriff's website. The search works by last name or booking number. If the system lacks a search field, use the browser's Ctrl+F function to search the page.

To start your search, you will need:

  • The person's full legal name (last name and first name)
  • The booking number, if known

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

By Phone

Call the main jail line or the sheriff's non-emergency dispatch line. For the city of San Diego, the police department takes calls at 619-531-2000 (non-emergency). For questions about county jail custody, contact the Sheriff's Department directly.

In Person

Visit the information reception window at the main county correctional facility:

The reception usually operates daily, but specific hours should be confirmed by phone before visiting.

Find San Diego Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially registered in the jail. It is the first document that records the fact of custody.

Upon booking, the following information is generated:

  • A unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • List of charges
  • The agency that made the arrest (e.g., Sheriff's Department, SDPD, or others)
  • Personal information of the detainee — name, date of birth, physical description

Access to these records online is possible in several ways. The inmate roster on the sheriff's website displays data on current detainees. If the case has already been transferred to court, details can be found through the court records access system of the Superior Court. Note: criminal case documents are available for viewing only in person at the courthouse.

To obtain copies of old records or documents not available in the online roster, submit a public records request. County data portals allow access to some documents without a formal request under the California Public Records Act. If a police arrest report is needed, contact the relevant section of the SDPD.

Search the San Diego Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in Latin script. If needed, add the first name to narrow down the results. Some practical tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter can change the result
  • Try a shortened name if the full one yields no matches (e.g., "Rob" instead of "Robert")
  • If the last name is hyphenated, try both versions — with and without the hyphen

Search by Booking Number

This method is the most accurate. The booking number is a unique identifier assigned upon registration. If you know it, enter it in the appropriate field — the system will return one specific record.

If the Search Yields No Results

A lack of results does not always mean the person was not detained. Here are possible reasons:

  1. The person has already been released — the roster shows only those currently in custody.
  2. The booking is not yet complete — there may be a few hours between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the system.
  3. The person is held in another county facility or a municipal jail.
  4. The name is recorded differently than you are searching for it.

In such a case, call the jail directly. If there is an open warrant, check the warrants section on the court's website.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in San Diego

The Sheriff's Department inmate roster is updated throughout the day, but it does not happen instantly. Between the time of arrest and the appearance of the record in the online system, it usually takes from one to several hours — the time needed to complete the booking process, fingerprinting, and data entry.

Main limitations of the roster:

LimitationsExplanation
Delay after arrestThe record appears only after full booking completion — sometimes 2–6 hours later
Disappearance after releaseWhen a person is released (on bail, by court decision, etc.), the record is removed from the current roster
Only current custodyThe roster is not an archive of all past bookings; it only shows those currently in custody
Data entry errorsThe last name may be recorded with a mistake or in an alternative transliteration
MinorsRecords of persons under 18 are not published

For historical records or information about past arrests, contact the Sheriff's Department with a public records request under the California Public Records Act. The Fresh Start program of the county public defender's office also assists with questions regarding convictions and their expungement. Information about probation can be obtained through a separate county department.
